THE DELINQUENTS by Rodrigo Moreno, a drama inspired by the Argentine classic HARDLY A CRIMINAL.
"It's a film about freedom, so if the viewer feels a sense of liberation, the work has achieved its objective."
In the "Un Certain Regard" category, the film "The Delinquents" by Argentine filmmaker Rodrigo Moreno participates. He drew inspiration from the Argentine classic "Hardly a Criminal" (1949) by Hugo Fregonese to develop the story of two employees who one day decide to rob the bank where they work.
Cahiers Du Cinema has described it as an "artisanal observation of a multiverse, where different versions of reality coexist."
The story follows Morán and Román, two bank employees who begin to question the monotony of their lives, and one of them makes the decision to commit a crime, involving the other. Under the idea of a better future, their risky decision leads to a profound change in their lives.
In an interview today with the festival, Moreno spoke about how he would like his feature film to be perceived. "I would like the audience to see that it is possible to watch and enjoy a film that avoids going too far just to impress the audience or the critics. Of course, it is a film about freedom, so if the viewer feels a sense of liberation, the work has achieved its objective."
"The Delinquents" had its first screening at Cannes today, where the review from the emblematic Cahiers magazine has been released, which additionally states in its critique: "Paroxysmically Argentine, with its eccentricities bordering on the fantastic, its embedded narratives, and its playful tone, the film specifically recalls the recent example of Trenque Lauquen by Laura Citarella, with whom it shares an attraction to nature (as well as actress Laura Paredes, who plays a small role here)."
