The Life of Chuck - The movie that redefines Stephen King’s legacy

The Life of Chuck: The movie that redefines Stephen King’s legacy. | This production marks a new collaboration between Mike Flanagan and Stephen King. Adapted from King’s short story, the film narrates in reverse order the life of a man who loses his battle against an illness, blending drama, fantasy, and reflection on the mark one leaves on the world.

“The Life of Chuck” is an American film directed and written by Mike Flanagan, based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name, published in 2020 as part of the collection If It Bleeds.

After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it won the People’s Choice Award, it will hit U.S. theaters in June. The movie follows Charles “Chuck” Krantz, played by Tom Hiddleston, whose story is told in reverse: from his death at 39 due to a brain tumor back to his childhood in a seemingly haunted house.

Diamond Films, responsible for international distribution, explains that “as the story rewinds, we uncover key fragments of Chuck’s journey: his job, his love for music, and his personal struggles,” and that it is “a tale that weaves realistic elements with touches of fantasy to explore the importance of individual moments in life and how each person leaves their mark on the universe.”

A different tone and genre

Although both Stephen King and Mike Flanagan are renowned for their work in the horror genre, The Life of Chuck moves away from scares to offer a more introspective and life-affirming drama.

Following its world premiere at TIFF, outlets like Variety compared it to more emotional adaptations of King’s work, such as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, with Flanagan describing it as a “celebration of existence.” When the filmmaker presented the feature at TIFF, he hinted at its reflective nature with the phrase: “When an old man dies, a library burns down.”

The film features an omniscient narrator voiced by Nick Offerman, who serves as a “God-like” storyteller, reinforcing the fable-like tone of the story and guiding viewers through the three acts that make up Chuck’s life.

Flanagan has explained that the spark to adapt The Life of Chuck came during the 2020 lockdown when he read the short story in If It Bleeds. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he said: “The first third of The Life of Chuck shook me. There was no way [King] could have written it before the world came to such a strange halt, but he did. The feeling of anxiety, uncertainty, and everything crumbling hit me hard.”

While not a horror movie, The Life of Chuck includes cameos from actors who frequently collaborate with Flanagan, such as Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Samantha Sloyan. Fans will recognize this as a nod to Netflix series like The Haunting of Hill House or Midnight Mass.

A personal and optimistic work

During the festival, Flanagan claimed this new film is the best he’s ever made: “It had to be done now. It’s a story I needed to tell at this point in my career.” The filmmaker confirmed that the adaptation remains fairly faithful to the original version.

After adapting King’s novels Gerald’s Game (2017) and Doctor Sleep (2019) for the screen, Flanagan said his dynamic with King remains the same as in previous projects: the prolific writer gets involved in decisions about script details and casting in the early stages, but once production begins, he prefers to step back.

The Life of Chuck began filming in Alabama in October 2023, amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike, managing to proceed thanks to a provisional agreement with the union. Filming wrapped in mid-November of that year, with a cast that also includes Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Jacob Tremblay.
