Oscar Nominees 2025 - "Emilia Pérez" Leads the Nominations

Due to the fires that started on January 7th and have left death, devastation, and hundreds of affected and evacuated people in Los Angeles, the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the Oscar nominees for 2025 virtually this morning, without the traditional media presence. While the host, writer, producer, and comedian Conan O'Brien will be the master of ceremonies for its 97th gala, actors and comedians Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott were in charge of announcing the nominees.

"Emilia Pérez," the bold and controversial musical film by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, leads this year's nominations with 13 nods. It also sets a historical record for nominations at these awards, being an international production.

That record was previously held by Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma," which achieved ten nominations in 2018. The adaptation of "Emilia Pérez," which originally was a libretto for an opera, has made its way into the awards race not only for Best Picture but also for Best International Feature Film and Best Director. This feature film is followed by "The Brutalist" with 10 nominations. Interestingly, both productions have been questioned in recent days for using Generative AI and Cloning to enhance the acting performance of part of their cast. It's great news for Latin American and Ibero-American cinema with the nominations of "I'm Still Here," the new production from the Brazilian filmmaker who has secured three nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best International Feature Film. This isn't the first time Salles has been recognized by the Oscars. In the past, he received nominations for "City of God," "The Motorcycle Diaries," and in 1998 for "Central Station," a film starring Fernanda Montenegro, mother of Fernanda Torres, the lead actress in his new feature film set in 1971 during the military dictatorship, following a mother forced to reinvent herself when her family's life is shattered by an act of arbitrary violence.

The Academy has set a maximum of ten slots for the Best Picture category, and for 2025, there are exactly ten nominees, including the 2024 Palme d'Or winner, "Anora," the latest independent story from American Sean Baker, which has garnered six nominations. In addition to the Brazilian co-production, the Best International Feature Film category also includes "The Girl with the Needle" (Denmark), "Emilia Pérez" (France), "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" (Germany), and "Flow" (Latvia), the last of which is also nominated for Best Animated Feature.

For the 97th Oscars, a total of 397 eligible productions were considered, with 85 belonging to the foreign category. The number of voting members (updated to December) is 9,905.
